ABD (All But Dissertation) Ph.D./Ed.D. Completion Programs

Reaching ABD (All But Dissertation) status marks a significant milestone in a doctoral journey. Candidates who reach this stage have already completed years of advanced coursework and research preparation, yet the dissertation often becomes the most challenging step toward earning a doctoral degree. For professionals who want to finish their doctorate without restarting a new program, ABD completion programs can provide the structure and support needed to complete the final phase of their studies.

At ÎçÒ¹¸£Àû¾«Æ·¸£Àû, the Ph.D. in Leadership - All But Dissertation (ABD) Completion Program offers a pathway for doctoral candidates who have completed coursework in a Ph.D. or Ed.D. program but not their dissertation. The program helps professionals complete their remaining research requirements while continuing their careers.

A Completion Pathway Focused on Leadership

Alvernia’s Ph.D. in Leadership program is grounded in applied leadership theory, organizational strategy, and research-informed decision-making. The ABD completion pathway allows candidates who have already completed doctoral coursework at another accredited institution to transfer qualifying credits and focus primarily on the dissertation.

Through a comprehensive portfolio review, students may transfer up to 42 doctoral credits, with at least 18 credits completed at Alvernia. This structure allows candidates to retain much of their prior academic work while providing a clear pathway to completing the doctoral degree. The program maintains doctoral-level rigor while helping candidates concentrate on finishing their dissertations.

Flexible Format for Working Professionals

Many ABD candidates are experienced professionals balancing academic goals with demanding careers. Alvernia’s ABD Completion Program is designed to support working professionals through a flexible learning format.

The program follows a hybrid structure that combines online coursework, virtual collaboration, and on-campus seminars. For students who require additional flexibility, a fully remote option is also available.

This structure allows candidates to maintain their professional responsibilities while continuing to make progress toward completing their dissertations. Defined milestones and ongoing faculty engagement help students stay on track and avoid the delays that often occur during independent dissertation work.

Faculty Mentorship and Dissertation Support

Completing a dissertation requires focused guidance and consistent feedback. In Alvernia’s ABD Completion Program, students work closely with experienced faculty scholars and practitioner leaders who provide mentorship throughout the research process.

Faculty advisors support students in refining research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, strengthening academic writing, and preparing for the dissertation defense. This individualized guidance helps candidates reengage with their research while meeting the academic expectations of doctoral scholarship.

Educational Leadership Concentration

Within the Ph.D. in Leadership program, Alvernia offers an Educational Concentration for ABD students whose professional experience or research interests focus on education.

This option is designed for candidates completing doctoral work related to Ph.D. or Ed.D. programs in education, including professionals working in K–12 school systems, higher education institutions, or education-focused organizations. Dissertation research in this concentration may address topics such as instructional leadership, institutional governance, policy implementation, organizational change, and equity in education.

Students pursuing the concentration receive the same dissertation mentorship and academic support as other Ph.D. candidates, with advising aligned with scholarship in educational leadership.
